Poetry Sunday: End of Summer

We are at the changing of the seasons. Summer is ending; autumn arrives in three days' time. Ready or not, here it comes. And life moves on.

End of Summer

by Stanley Kunitz
An agitation of the air,
A perturbation of the light
Admonished me the unloved year
Would turn on its hinge that night.

I stood in the disenchanted field
Amid the stubble and the stones,
Amazed, while a small worm lisped to me
The song of my marrow-bones.

Blue poured into summer blue,
A hawk broke from his cloudless tower,
The roof of the silo blazed, and I knew
That part of my life was over.

Already the iron door of the north
Clangs open: birds, leaves, snows
Order their populations forth,
And a cruel wind blows.

                    ~~~
The "iron door of the north" hasn't poured any "cruel winds" or snows our way just yet, but of migrating birds we have plenty.
And so summer passes and a new season begins. Welcome, autumn!
  1. That's a chilling thought, another chapter of our short life coming to a close. But at least I have hopes of so much more to come. Our temperatures dropped quite a bit so our heat had to come on to maintain our house temperature. But I'm looking forward to the rest and refreshing of the fall and winter seasons, plans and dreams for next year.
    1. Autumn reaches you in the Northwest a lot sooner than it does us. So far it is a hit or miss thing here - some days autumn, some days summer. I do love this time of year.
  2. It was very much summer temperature-wise here in the Northeast at least until yesterday. Today starts a week with temps in the mid 70s, which is a welcome relief after a very hot summer.
    1. That sounds wonderful! I look forward to the arrival of 70s here. Today, we are still in the low 90s. Well, we get to the 70s, but only at night.
