Poetry Sunday: A Prayer in Spring

The first amaryllis blossom of the year welcomes spring to my garden.

A Prayer in Spring

by Robert Frost

Oh, give us pleasure in the flowers to-day;
And give us not to think so far away
As the uncertain harvest; keep us here
All simply in the springing of the year.

Oh, give us pleasure in the orchard white,
Like nothing else by day, like ghosts by night;
And make us happy in the happy bees,
The swarm dilating round the perfect trees.

And make us happy in the darting bird
That suddenly above the bees is heard,
The meteor that thrusts in with needle bill,
And off a blossom in mid air stands still.

For this is love and nothing else is love,
The which it is reserved for God above
To sanctify to what far ends He will,
But which it only needs that we fulfil.

~~~
What a perfect description of a hovering hummingbird:
"The meteor that thrusts in with needle bill,
  And off a blossom in mid air stands still."
And those "meteors" will be here any day now. Because it's spring!
  1. A poem as warm and lovely as spring. It makes me think of my parents, who loved God with a lasting faith and loved the natural world as evidence of God's love for them.
  2. How beautiful that poem! And I thought the meteor with the needle bill was a reference to a hummingbird and you confirmed it. He nailed it! :-)
  4. Spring is hiding its face from upstate New York with cold, gloomy weather. But this time, we have crocus and plants budding out. Snowflakes, squill and the first daffodils. You can't fool us, spring. We know you are out there somewhere!
    1. It's very weird. Our first day of spring was cooler than any we've had recently with a high temperature of 60 and tonight the projected low is 36! Our lowest temperature during winter was only 33. But, yes, spring is actually here.
