Poetry Sunday: Fire and Ice

Brief and to the point. That's Robert Frost in this little poem. It is actually one of his most popular poems.

He considers the end of the world and the debate about whether it will end in fire or in ice and comes to the conclusion that both would accomplish the task equally well.

Fire and Ice

by Robert Frost

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

  1. I once had a girlfriend who told me I was like fire and ice. I figured it was my Leo sun with my Virgo moon and rising sign. I am pretty sure we won't be around to know how the world ends.

    1. I suppose we all have a bit of fire and a bit of ice in our spirits, and we need both for balance. As does our planet. Just as well that we won't be there for the end.

  2. We won't be there for end unless...those who hold access to our weapons of fire lose their grip. I heard a news report today about fears that if the regime in North Korea falls, that their weapons might be up for grabs. Then what?

    1. There are scary things happening in the world and I am not comforted by knowing that those in power in our country are clueless. I think I agree with Frost that the world is more likely to end in fire - and not just because of global warming.
